Sod Installation
Sometimes a lawn cannot be fixed with maintenance alone. When the grass is mostly gone — bare dirt, thin patches, weed takeover, or damage from construction, drainage, or disease — sod is the fastest way to get a usable lawn back. Seeding takes months and depends on perfect weather; sod gives you an established lawn in a matter of weeks.
Understanding Your Sod Needs
Fresh sod is only as good as the preparation underneath it. Installing sod over compacted soil, unresolved drainage, or the wrong grass type for your sun exposure is a waste of money — it will fail the same way the old lawn did. Our sod installation service handles the full process: we evaluate why the old lawn failed, prepare the soil, grade as needed, install the proper sod for yard conditions (bermuda, fescue, zoysia), and give you clear watering and establishment instructions.
We are honest about when sod is the right choice and when it is not. If your lawn failed because of deep shade, persistent drainage problems, or soil conditions that have not been corrected, sod will fail too. We will tell you that during the estimate and help you decide whether to fix the underlying issue first.
What to Expect
Evaluation of why the existing lawn failed — sun, shade, drainage, soil, traffic
Removal of old grass, weeds, and debris from the installation area
Soil preparation — tilling, grading, and amendment as needed
Sod selection based on your property's sun exposure and conditions (ex. bermuda, fescue, zoysia, etc)
Installation of sod rolls and sod squares with tight seams and proper alignment
Watering and establishment instructions tailored to your property
Who This Service Is Appropriate For
Homeowners and commercial properties with bare or severely thin lawns where seeding is not practical
Properties recovering from construction, utility work, or tree removal
Customers who want an established lawn quickly rather than waiting for seed to germinate
New construction or renovation projects where the lawn needs to be installed from scratch
Property Considerations
Many properties in our area have mixed sun and shade from the mature tree canopy. Sod selection is critical — a sun-loving grass installed in a shaded yard will thin and fail within a season. We help you choose a turf type that matches your actual conditions, not just what looks good in a catalog.
Georgia red clay is common in our area and can be highly compacted, especially in new construction or areas with foot traffic. Soil preparation — tilling and amendment — is essential for sod to root successfully. Laying sod over compacted clay is a common reason new lawns fail.
Sloped properties in our area need special attention during sod installation. Sod on a slope can slide before it roots if not pinned properly, and water can run off before it soaks in. We take the terrain into account during installation.
Seasonal Considerations
Spring and early fall are the best windows for sod installation in Northeast Atlanta. The temperatures are moderate, and there is enough rain to support establishment without the stress of summer heat.
Summer installation is possible but requires diligent watering — the heat stresses new sod and increases the risk of failure.
Fall is ideal because the cooler temperatures reduce stress while the soil is still warm enough for root growth.
Winter installation is not recommended — the sod may survive but will not root until the soil warms in spring.

TOPIC FAQs
-
Plan to keep foot traffic off the new sod for 2–3 weeks. The sod needs time to root into the soil below, and walking on it before it has rooted can shift the pieces and disrupt establishment. After 2–3 weeks, when the sod has rooted firmly, normal foot traffic is fine.
-
No, we do not offer a warranty on sod survival. Sod establishment depends on watering, weather, and soil conditions after installation — factors we do not control. We do everything right on our end — proper soil prep, grading, and installation — and we give you clear watering instructions. Following those instructions is the most important factor in whether the sod takes.
-
New sod needs consistent moisture for the first 2–3 weeks. Typically that means watering daily — sometimes twice daily in hot weather — to keep the soil beneath the sod damp but not saturated. After the sod roots, you gradually reduce to a normal irrigation schedule. We provide a specific watering plan based on your property, season, and sod type.
-
Lawns fail for a combination of reasons — too much shade, compacted soil, poor drainage, heavy foot traffic, wrong grass type, or a combination of these. Sod makes sense when you don’t have the time to reestablish a new lawn from seeding. We evaluate the site during the estimate to identify the cause. If the underlying issue is not corrected, new sod will fail the same way. That is why we address soil, drainage, and shade before installing new grass. -
It depends on how heavy the shade is. Some turf varieties tolerate partial shade better than others, and we select accordingly. But no grass thrives in deep, year-round shade. If your property has heavy shade from mature trees, sod may not be the right solution — we will tell you that honestly and discuss alternatives like shade-tolerant ground covers or landscape beds.

Sod gives an immediate, uniform lawn, while seeding takes longer to establish but can be more budget-friendly for larger areas. We can talk through which fits your timeline and site during the estimate.
